Millersville 250 Goals

  1. To reflect on Millersville Borough’s history and heritage, and pay respect to the people who were here before us;
  2. To showcase Millersville Borough by focusing attention on our people, our schools, our businesses and our service organizations;
  3. To plan celebration events that will appeal to a variety of interests and ages and to incorporate the 250th theme into normally scheduled events; and
  4. To bring the citizens of our community together through these events, fortifying existing relationships and building new relationships.

In 1761, John Miller laid out the town of Millersville. In 2011, Millersville will celebrate the 250th anniversary of that event. As a result of discussions among the membership of the Millersville Area Historical Society, a committee was formed to coordinate the anniversary celebration activities. Members of the executive committee are representative of borough government, borough citizens, historical society members, members of the business community and representatives from Millersville University and Penn Manor School District.

Millersville Borough Council has expressed its support for our endeavor and has allowed the Committee to use the Municipal Office facility for its meetings.

The Millersville 250 Executive Committee has solicited proposals for activities from individuals, organizations, churches and businesses within the Millersville Community. The Committee will review and endorse proposals and coordinate a calendar of events for the celebration.

Millersville 250 hopes to celebrate Millersville’s 250th anniversary through a series of year-long activities. Millersville 250 hopes to involve Millersville’s various constituents in activities that emphasize Millersville’s history and values, activities that enhance the image and awareness of Millersville and activities that increase pride in Millersville.

Millersville 250 anticipates that the cost of and funds raised by the various anniversary celebrations will be handled by the various businesses and organizations that sponsor those activities. However, the Millersville 250 Committee will do some fundraising through subscriptions and/or sales of promotional items. Most of those funds will be used to promote the celebration within the community and to encourage community participation.

The Executive Committee of the Millersville 250 initiative will oversee all business (including expenditures) of the 250th Anniversary of the Borough of Millersville. The Executive Committee will consist of the two co-chairs, secretary, treasurer, one-member at large and all committee chairs. The Executive Committee meets on a regular basis (between 2007-2011), in the Millersville Borough Municipal Building. The Millersville 250 initiative was originally developed by the Millersville Area Historical Society. Financial oversight will also be realized through this committee including general accounting of all programs and expenses with the Borough.

There are five sub-committees within the organization of this anniversary celebration committee:

Standing Committees

Each committee will have a chair or co-chair and will meet at the discretion of that individual committee.  The overall co-chairs of the Executive Committee will serve as ex-officios on all committees.

Historical Exhibits & Publications

This committee has oversight on developing historical exhibits, a commemorative publication on the 250th Anniversary and/or any other related historical publications and will preserve all documentation of the Anniversary Celebration.  This committee will also develop any special dedications.

Events

This committee will work with organizations, the Penn Manor School District, area churches, Millersville University and local businesses to incorporate the 250th theme into their events/programs for 2011. Part of the objective of this committee/and overall initiative is not to compete with regular scheduled events offered every year within the Borough. Sub-committee chairs, working with each major “signature” event can be established. Events will be held between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011.
A List of suggestions has already been established, which is a work in progress. This committee will be charged with the oversight of establishing said calendar of events specifically organized by this initiative, as well as incorporating those from external entities. The Events Committee will work with all committees, where necessary, to execute said plans.

Communications & Marketing

This committee has two main objectives:

This committee will also draft a logo/seal and/or theme for the Sesquibicentennial celebration. The Executive Committee will approve the final logo.
